CELPIP Results: How Long They Take, How to Read Them and When to Ask for a Re-evaluation

CELPIP results are posted in your online CELPIP account 2 to 4 business days after the test, and you get an email when they are ready. The official score report is a PDF you download yourself; there is no paper copy any more. Here is what the report shows, what to do if your scores are late, how long IRCC accepts them, and when a re-evaluation makes sense.

When CELPIP results come out#

Paragon, which runs CELPIP, says scores are available online 2 to 4 business days after the test date. (One page on celpip.ca says 3 to 4.) Weekends and holidays don’t count, so the calendar wait is usually longer than it sounds.

If you test on…Results usually by…
MondayWednesday to Friday
WednesdayFriday to Tuesday
FridayTuesday to Thursday
Saturday or SundayTuesday to Thursday

Add a day for any holiday in between. You get an email as soon as your scores are posted, so there is no need to keep checking.

If your results are late

If more than five business days have passed, Paragon lists a few reasons scores may be held:

  • your test needed extra review before scores could be released;
  • you reported a test day issue within 24 hours and it is still being looked into;
  • Paragon needs to confirm your identity or is looking into a possible irregularity.

If it has been more than five business days and you haven’t had an email from the CELPIP Office, contact them. If it has been three business days or less, wait.

How to check and download your score report#

  1. Sign in to your CELPIP account on celpip.ca.
  2. Click Check Scores.
  3. Click Download CELPIP Official Score Report to save the PDF.

The PDF is the official report, and it is what IRCC and other organisations accept. Paper score reports have been discontinued, so keep the PDF somewhere safe. Your scores stay viewable in your account for five years from the test date.

CELPIP does not send results to IRCC for you. For Express Entry, you type your results into your profile, along with the certificate or form number and PIN if the form asks for them, and upload the PDF when you apply.

How to read your CELPIP scores#

The report gives a CELPIP level for each component: listening, reading, writing and speaking. There is no overall score, and Paragon doesn’t report how many questions you got right.

CELPIP levelCLBCEFRParagon’s description
1212C2Expert proficiency in high-stakes contexts
1111C1Advanced proficiency in high-stakes contexts
1010C1Highly effective proficiency in some high-stakes contexts
99B2Effective proficiency in some high-stakes contexts
88B2Good proficiency in more demanding contexts
77B2Adequate proficiency in somewhat demanding contexts
66B1Developing proficiency in everyday contexts
55B1Acquiring proficiency in everyday contexts
44A2Adequate proficiency for daily life activities
33A2Some proficiency in limited contexts
21–2A1Limited ability in contexts related to immediate needs
1, 0——Insufficient information to assess
NA——Not administered: you didn’t receive this component

Your CELPIP level is your CLB level in that skill. What matters next is the lowest of your four levels, because most programs set a minimum for every skill. Use our CELPIP score chart and calculator to see which programs you qualify for and how many Express Entry points your levels earn.

How the levels are worked out

  • Listening and reading are scored by computer. Each question is right or wrong, and blanks count as wrong. Your raw score is then adjusted for the difficulty of your test version (equating) and converted to a level. Some questions are unscored trial items, and you can’t tell which.
  • Speaking is rated by three to five raters and writing by four to six, working independently. If they disagree, an experienced benchmark rater scores it again. They rate content and coherence, vocabulary, listenability (readability for writing) and task fulfillment.

Paragon’s approximate chart puts level 7 at about 27 to 31 correct out of 38 in listening and 24 to 28 in reading, and level 9 at about 33 to 35 and 31 to 33. More detail in our listening and reading guides.

How long CELPIP results are valid#

UseHow old your results can be
Express Entry and permanent residenceLess than 2 years old when you create your profile and when you submit your application
Canadian citizenshipIRCC’s citizenship pages don’t mention a two-year limit, and they ask you to include results you used for permanent residence even if they have expired
Other organisationsTheir own rule. Paragon says scores are valid for five years from the date the report is issued

The two-year rule catches people in the Express Entry pool. IRCC refuses applications with expired results, so if yours will expire before an invitation is likely, book a new test in time. Citizenship rules are explained in our guide to CELPIP for citizenship.

Re-evaluation: when it is worth it#

You can ask Paragon to re-evaluate one or more components of your CELPIP test:

  • within six months of the test date, through your CELPIP account;
  • for a fee that depends on which components you choose, paid when you apply;
  • only once per component, and the request can’t be cancelled;
  • with results in about one to two weeks.

If the level for a re-evaluated component goes up, the fee for that component is refunded. Paragon says listening and reading are unlikely to change, because they are scored by computer.

So re-evaluation is mainly worth considering for speaking or writing, and only when one level matters, for example a 6 where you need 7, or an 8 where CLB 9 would unlock more Express Entry points. If your level is lower than you expected across several tasks, a retake after focused practice is usually a better use of the money.

If something went wrong on test day

Tell the test centre staff straight away, and report it in your CELPIP account within 24 hours. Paragon won’t act on test day issues reported later.

What to do after your results#

  • You met your target: save the PDF, note the test date, and work out when the two-year limit ends if you are using it for Express Entry.
  • One skill is short: plan a retake around that skill. You can register for only one test session within five calendar days, so a next-day retake isn’t possible. Our guides for CLB 7 and CLB 9 show what each level asks for.
  • Speaking or writing held you back: those skills move with timed practice and feedback. Our speaking sample answers and the task 1 and task 2 writing guides show the structure raters reward.

Questions

How many days does it take to get CELPIP results?

Paragon says scores are available online 2 to 4 business days after the test date. Business days don’t include weekends or holidays, so results from a Saturday test usually arrive between Tuesday and Thursday.

How do I check my CELPIP results?

Sign in to your CELPIP account and click “Check Scores”. From there you can download the CELPIP Official Score Report as a PDF.

How long are CELPIP results valid?

For Express Entry and other permanent residence applications, IRCC needs results less than two years old when you create your profile and when you apply. Paragon keeps scores viewable in your account for five years. For citizenship, IRCC’s pages don’t mention the same two-year limit.

What is 28 out of 38 in CELPIP listening?

On Paragon’s approximate chart, 28 correct answers in listening falls in the level 7 range (27 to 31). The exact cut-off shifts a little between test versions.

Is 7 a good score in CELPIP?

A 7 in every skill is CLB 7, the minimum for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and for Canadian Experience Class jobs in TEER 0 or 1. It is a solid intermediate level, but Express Entry pays far more for CLB 9.

Does CELPIP send results to IRCC?

No. You download the PDF score report and upload it with your application, and you enter your results in your Express Entry profile yourself.

Can my CELPIP score go down after a re-evaluation?

Paragon’s pages describe a refund when your level goes up but don’t say a level can’t go down. Request a re-evaluation only for a component where you have a clear reason to expect a higher level.
