CELPIP Validity: How Long Your Results Last for PR, Citizenship and Australia

For Canadian permanent residence, CELPIP results are valid for two years: they must be less than two years old when you create your Express Entry profile and when you apply. Other uses have other rules, and celpip.ca itself gives two different answers. Here is the rule for each purpose, with dates worked out.

CELPIP validity at a glance#

A CELPIP score report has no single expiry date. Each organisation that accepts CELPIP decides how old the results can be. Here are the main ones:

UseHow long results are accepted
Express Entry (FSW, CEC, FST)Less than 2 years old when you complete your profile and when you submit your PR application
Post-graduation work permit (PGWP)Less than 2 years old when you submit your application
Canadian citizenshipResults from your PR application are accepted even if expired, if they meet the citizenship minimum
Australian visasDepends on the visa subclass; set by the Department of Home Affairs
Professional bodies, colleges, employersTheir own rule; check before you rely on old results

The rest of this guide explains each rule, why Paragon’s website seems to contradict itself, and how to time a retest.

Two years or five? What celpip.ca says#

Search for “CELPIP validity” and you will find both numbers, both from Paragon, the company that runs CELPIP. On October 10, 2026:

  • The test format and scoring page said CELPIP scores “are valid for two years from the date your score report is issued”.
  • The CELPIP results page, above the same score chart, said they “are valid for five years from the date your score report is issued”.
  • The results page also says you can view your scores in your CELPIP account for five years from the test date.

The official pages disagree, so don’t rely on either sentence alone. In practice it matters less than it seems: Paragon doesn’t decide whether your results are accepted. IRCC, Australia’s Department of Home Affairs or your licensing body does, and each publishes its own limit. The five years of account access is useful for downloading your score report again, not for using old results.

Express Entry and permanent residence#

IRCC’s rule is short: your test results must be less than two years old when you

  1. complete your Express Entry profile, and
  2. submit your application for permanent residence.

The second date is the one that catches people. Candidates can wait in the pool for months, and an invitation only gives you a limited time to apply. If your results have expired when you submit, IRCC refuses the application.

A worked example

IRCC doesn’t say whether the two years run from the test date or the date of the score report, so count from the test date, the earlier one, to be safe.

EventDateResults still under 2 years old?
CELPIP-General testNovember 15, 2025—
Express Entry profile createdDecember 1, 2025Yes
Invitation to applySeptember 20, 2027Yes, but less than 2 months left
Last safe day to submit the PR applicationNovember 14, 2027Yes, just
Application submittedNovember 20, 2027No — refused

The dates are an example. Your invitation’s own deadline also applies; whichever comes first is your real limit.

If you are invited and your results will expire before you can apply, IRCC lists three options: test again, apply before the results expire, or decline the invitation and go back into the pool. If you haven’t been invited yet, IRCC suggests making sure your results stay valid for as long as you expect to be in the pool. Our English test for Canada PR guide covers which tests IRCC accepts.

Post-graduation work permit#

For PGWP applications submitted on or after November 1, 2024, IRCC asks for proof of English or French, with results that are less than two years old when you submit. CELPIP-General is accepted, and all four skills must be tested. The score you need depends on your study program.

Students sometimes take CELPIP early in their program and plan to reuse it later for Express Entry. That can work, but both clocks run from the same test: results from your first year of college may be too old by the time you apply for permanent residence.

Canadian citizenship#

Citizenship is the exception. If you are 18 to 54, you need proof of CLB 4 or higher in speaking and listening, and IRCC lets you reuse the language results from your PR application:

  • If you took CELPIP-General on or after April 1, 2014, you need 4 or higher in listening and speaking.
  • IRCC tells applicants to include a copy of those results even if they’re expired.

So the two-year rule that matters so much for Express Entry doesn’t stop you from using the same CELPIP report for citizenship years later. If you don’t have results from your PR application, you can take a new test, and the shorter CELPIP-General LS test covers listening and speaking. Our CELPIP for citizenship guide lists all the other proof IRCC accepts.

Australian visas#

Australia’s Department of Home Affairs accepts CELPIP-General for tests taken on or after August 7, 2025, when its list of approved English tests changed. Home Affairs doesn’t give one validity period for every visa. Instead, each visa subclass has its own required scores, type of evidence and test timeframe, and Home Affairs notes that results from before that date may still be valid for up to 3 years depending on the subclass.

Check the page for your visa on the Home Affairs website before you book. Paragon’s score chart also shows which CELPIP levels match Australia’s English levels (Vocational, Competent, Proficient and Superior); our CLB 10 guide lists the higher ones.

When to retest#

  • Count back from your deadline, not forward from your test. For Express Entry, the latest day you might submit an application is what matters.
  • Leave room for results and a second attempt. Results arrive in 2 to 4 business days, and Paragon doesn’t let you book more than one test session within five calendar days.
  • Use the retest to improve. A new test is also a new chance at a higher score. If you are close to the next CLB level, see what it is worth in our CLB 9 guide before you book.
  • Update your profile. When you get new results, enter them in your Express Entry profile so your points reflect them.
  • Keep the PDF. Paper score reports have been discontinued. Download your official score report from your CELPIP account and keep a copy.

Questions

How long is CELPIP valid for PR?

For Express Entry, your results must be less than two years old when you complete your profile and again when you submit your application for permanent residence. If they have expired when you apply, IRCC refuses the application.

Does CELPIP expire for citizenship?

If you used CELPIP-General for permanent residence and scored 4 or higher in listening and speaking, IRCC asks you to include those results with your citizenship application even if they have expired.

Why does celpip.ca say CELPIP is valid for five years?

Paragon’s results page says scores are valid for five years from the date the score report is issued, while its test format page says two years. Paragon also keeps scores viewable in your account for five years. Whatever Paragon says, the organisation you apply to sets the limit, and IRCC uses two years for Express Entry.

How long is CELPIP valid for a post-graduation work permit?

IRCC asks for language test results that are less than two years old when you submit your PGWP application.

How long is CELPIP valid for Australia?

The Department of Home Affairs sets a test timeframe for each visa subclass, so check the requirements for your visa. CELPIP-General has been on its list of accepted tests for tests taken from August 7, 2025.

Can I extend my CELPIP results?

No. There is no way to extend a score report. If your results will expire before you can use them, you need to take the test again.
