Why are you taking CELPIP?

Your result will show what it means for this goal.

An independent practice estimate, not an official CELPIP result. MapleSpeak is not affiliated with or endorsed by Paragon Testing Enterprises.

What the level check measures

CELPIP-General has four skills, and each gets its own level. Here is what this free check covers.

Measured

Reading

13 questions: three quick ones from daily life, an everyday email like Part 1 and an article with two opinions like Part 4, on a topic you pick. Scored in your browser into a CLB range.

Coming soon

Listening

A conversation and a short news report, each played once, as on the test.

Try it, scored in the app

Speaking and writing

Try Task 1, Giving Advice, on the real 30 + 90 second timer and hear yourself back. Raters score these skills on four criteria, so we don’t guess a level here: the MapleSpeak app scores all eight speaking tasks and both writing tasks.

How your level is estimated

The real reading test has 38 questions. Paragon publishes an approximate chart that turns correct answers into a level: level 7, for example, is about 24 to 28 correct, or 63 to 74 percent. We start from the same percentages for our 13 questions, which go from easier to harder, and set the bands a little higher because the warm-up is easier than the real test.

A short test can’t place anyone within one level, so the result is always a range. Your score is worked out in your browser: your answers never leave your device.

Questions

Is this the official CELPIP practice test?

No. Paragon, which runs CELPIP, offers free official practice tests on celpip.ca. This is an independent level check written by MapleSpeak in the format of the test, and it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Paragon Testing Enterprises.

How accurate is the result?

It is an estimate. A short test can’t place you within one level, so you get a range, such as CLB 7–8, based on Paragon’s published reading score chart. Your real CELPIP result may be different.

Why does it check only reading?

Reading is scored from correct answers, so a short test can estimate it fairly. Listening is coming next. Speaking and writing are scored by trained raters on four criteria, so here you can try one speaking task on the real timer, and the MapleSpeak app scores all of them.

Do you store my answers?

No. The test runs in your browser and nothing is sent to us. Your last result is saved only on this device, so you can come back to it.

How many correct answers do I need for CLB 7 on the real test?

Paragon’s approximate chart puts level 7 at about 24 to 28 correct answers out of 38 in reading, and 27 to 31 out of 38 in listening.

What CLB do I need?

Citizenship asks for CLB 4 in listening and speaking for adults aged 18 to 54. The Federal Skilled Worker Program asks for CLB 7 in every skill. In Express Entry, CLB 9 in every skill earns the most language points. Always check the current rules on canada.ca.
