About MapleSpeak

Who writes our CELPIP guides, and how we make sure they are right.

Who we are

MapleSpeak is an iPhone app for practising the speaking and writing parts of CELPIP-General, the English test used for Canadian permanent residence and citizenship. It runs all eight speaking tasks and both writing tasks on the real test timers and gives an estimated CLB level with feedback.

The guides on this site are written by the team that builds the app. We write them because the same questions come up again and again: what score do I need, what does the test cost where I live, how long do results take, what does a good answer sound like. We try to answer them plainly, with the source for every rule.

MapleSpeak is independent. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by Paragon Testing Enterprises, which runs CELPIP, or by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

How we check facts

  • Official sources only, for rules and numbers. Test format, scoring, fees and policies come from celpip.ca. Language requirements, CLB conversions, CRS points and citizenship rules come from canada.ca. CLB level descriptions come from the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks. Facts about IELTS and PTE Core come from their official websites.
  • Every guide lists its sources at the end, with links and the date we checked them.
  • Prices and test dates are dated. Fees outside Canada and test centre listings come from CELPIP’s own booking system, and we say on which day we looked. They change, so we tell you to confirm before you book.
  • When official pages disagree, we say so. For example, celpip.ca gives results as 2 to 4 business days on one page and 3 to 4 on another. We show both rather than pick one.
  • Our own estimates are labelled. Plain-language summaries of levels, study advice and the levels we give sample answers are our judgement, and we mark them as such.

Sample questions and answers

Paragon does not publish its live test questions. Every practice question and sample answer on this site is written by our team in the style of the test. None of them is an official, leaked or remembered test question. The level we give a sample answer, such as “around CLB 9”, is our estimate to show the difference between levels, not an official rating.

Keeping guides up to date

Each guide shows the date it was last updated. When a fee, rule or format that a guide covers changes, we update the guide and its date. Immigration rules can change quickly, so always confirm the current rules on canada.ca before you apply.

What our guides are not

  • Not immigration or legal advice. We are not immigration consultants or lawyers. For advice on your own case, use canada.ca or a licensed immigration consultant or lawyer.
  • Not official results. Scores from the MapleSpeak app and the free level check are practice estimates. Only Paragon issues CELPIP results.

Corrections

If you find something wrong or out of date in a guide, tell us through the support page. We check every report against the official source and fix the guide if needed.
