English Tests for Canada PR: CELPIP, IELTS General or PTE Core?

For Canadian permanent residence through Express Entry, IRCC accepts three English tests: CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core. All three convert to the same Canadian Language Benchmarks and all are valid for two years. They differ in how you speak, how long they take, how fast results come and where you can sit them. Here is the comparison, with the scores each test needs for CLB 7 and CLB 9.

The tests IRCC accepts#

IRCC’s list for Express Entry is short:

  • English: CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training, PTE Core.
  • French: TEF Canada, TCF Canada.

The name of the version matters. IRCC asks for the General versions: CELPIP-General (not the LS test, which is for citizenship), IELTS General Training (not Academic) and PTE Core (not PTE Academic). It does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry. Results must be less than two years old when you create your profile and when you apply.

The scores you need in each test#

Programs set their minimums in CLB, so the real question is what each test asks for the same CLB. These are IRCC’s official equivalents.

CLB 7: the Federal Skilled Worker minimum

TestListeningReadingWritingSpeaking
CELPIP-General7777
IELTS General Training6.06.06.06.0
PTE Core60606968

CLB 9: the most Express Entry points for the effort

TestListeningReadingWritingSpeaking
CELPIP-General9999
IELTS General Training8.07.07.07.0
PTE Core82788884

Notice where each test sets its hardest bar. In IELTS, listening jumps to 8.0 for CLB 9. In PTE Core, writing needs 88 out of 90. In CELPIP, every skill needs the same 9. The complete charts from CLB 4 to 10, including the French tests, are in our Canadian Language Benchmarks guide, and the points each level is worth are in our CLB 9 guide.

The biggest difference: how you speak#

  • CELPIP: you read a prompt, prepare for 30 to 60 seconds, then speak to the computer for 60 to 90 seconds, eight times. Nobody reacts. It suits people who like a clear structure and get nervous in front of an examiner.
  • IELTS: a real conversation with an examiner, who asks follow-up questions. It suits people who speak better when someone is listening, and who find talking to a screen strange.
  • PTE Core: short computer tasks that mix speaking with reading and listening, such as reading text aloud and repeating sentences, and each answer is recorded only once. It suits people who are quick and comfortable with fast, computer-scored tasks.

Writing differs too. CELPIP asks for an email and a survey response in everyday Canadian situations. IELTS General Training asks for a letter and an essay. PTE Core’s writing tasks are scored by computer alongside its speaking. If you are weighing CELPIP against IELTS, our detailed comparison covers each part.

How to choose#

  1. Check availability first. Outside Canada, the nearest centre and the next date can decide for you. CELPIP runs often in India, Nigeria and the UK but only a few times a month in many countries.
  2. Try sample questions for each. Start with the official samples on each test’s website. Notice which speaking format you handle best; it often decides the result.
  3. Look at your weakest skill. If listening is your weak point, IELTS’s 8.0 for CLB 9 is a high bar. If writing is, check what PTE Core’s 88 for CLB 9 would mean for you.
  4. Think about speed. If an Express Entry draw or an expiry date is close, results in 1 to 4 days (IELTS on computer, PTE Core, CELPIP) all work; paper IELTS outside Canada can take up to 13 days.
  5. Stick with one and practise its format. Switching tests between attempts costs you the practice you already have.

If you choose CELPIP, our four-week study plan is a good place to start.

Questions

Which English test is accepted for Canada PR?

For Express Entry, IRCC accepts CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core. IRCC’s list has no other English tests, so IELTS Academic, PTE Academic and TOEFL can’t be used, and IRCC says it doesn’t accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry.

Which English test is easiest for Canada PR?

None is easier for everyone. CELPIP uses Canadian everyday English and maps one to one to CLB. IELTS has a face-to-face speaking interview. PTE Core is shorter and fully computer-scored. The best choice is the one whose format suits you, which a practice test of each will show.

Is PTE Core accepted for Canada PR?

Yes. PTE Core is accepted for Express Entry and other economic immigration programs, and for citizenship. PTE Academic is not accepted for Canadian immigration.

How long are English test results valid for Canada PR?

Results must be less than two years old when you create your Express Entry profile and when you submit your application for permanent residence.

Can I take CELPIP or PTE Core outside Canada?

Yes. CELPIP-General is offered in Canada and 39 other countries, and Pearson says PTE Core is available at more than 500 test centres worldwide. Both are taken at a test centre, not at home.

What score do I need in IELTS for Canada PR?

For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, at least CLB 7, which is IELTS General Training 6.0 in every skill. For the most Express Entry points, CLB 9 is 8.0 in listening and 7.0 in reading, writing and speaking.
