The test format, start to finish
Everything happens on one computer, in one sitting, in this order:
| Order | Component | Length | What you do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Listening | 46–55 min | 6 parts, 38 questions, each recording played once |
| 2 | Reading | 43–56 min | 4 parts, 38 questions |
| 3 | Writing | 53 min | An email (27 min) and a survey answer (26 min), 150–200 words each |
| 4 | Speaking | 15 min | 8 tasks, recorded by the computer |
- No examiner. In speaking, the recording starts by itself when preparation time ends. Raters score it later.
- No scheduled break. You can ask for a washroom break, but the clock keeps running.
- Paper and pen are provided for notes. You can’t mark the screen.
- Each skill gets its own level. There is no overall score.
Guides to each part: listening, reading, writing task 1, writing task 2 and speaking.
Before you book
- Choose the right test. CELPIP-General covers all four skills and is the one for permanent residence. CELPIP-General LS covers only listening and speaking, takes about 1 hour 10 minutes, and is designated for Canadian citizenship.
- Know your target for each skill. Most programs set a minimum in every skill. The CELPIP score chart lists them, with a calculator.
- Check the fee. In October 2026, celpip.ca lists CELPIP-General at $299 plus tax and CELPIP-General LS at $199 plus tax.
- Plan around results. Results usually arrive online within a few business days. If you have a deadline, book with room for a second attempt.
- Re-evaluation exists. Within six months you can ask for one or more components to be rescored, for a fee that is refunded if your level changes. Listening and reading are scored by computer and rarely change.
Step 1: find your starting point
Take one full practice test on a timer before you study anything. Paragon’s free practice tests on celpip.ca are the closest to the real thing. Then write down a level for each skill and the gap to your goal.
Put most of your time on the skill with the biggest gap. For most people that is speaking or writing, because they are judged on organisation and task fulfillment as well as grammar, and they improve only with practice that gets feedback.
The four-week plan
About an hour a day, six days a week. Adjust the split toward your weakest skill.
| Week | Focus | Daily routine |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Learn the format | One part of each skill per day on the real timer. Read the official study pack for each skill. Note what surprised you. |
| 2 | Build structures | Two speaking tasks a day using a plan (opening, two ideas, closing). One writing task every other day with a template. One listening or reading part, reviewed with the answer key. |
| 3 | Fix your weak spots | Your two weakest speaking tasks every day with new questions. Rewrite one writing answer after feedback. Part 4 of reading and parts 5 and 6 of listening under time. |
| 4 | Test conditions | Two full mock tests, three days apart, in one sitting. Between them, review mistakes only. Rest the day before the test. |
What moves the score in each skill
Listening
Practise without pausing, take notes by speaker, and check every missed question against the transcript.
Reading
Read the questions before the text in diagram and viewpoint parts, and never leave a blank: wrong answers cost nothing.
Writing
Cover every point in the task, one paragraph each, in 150 to 200 words. Practise without spell check, because the test has none.
Speaking
Speak until the timer ends, speak to the person the task names, and use the preparation time for three key words, not sentences.
Test day checklist
- Bring the identification document you registered with. Check the test-day rules on celpip.ca for what is accepted.
- Arrive early; check-in takes time.
- Eat before you go. There is no scheduled break in three hours.
- In speaking, speak clearly at a normal volume. Other test takers may be speaking at the same time, so focus on your own screen.
- Use every minute: in reading and listening, answer every question before the timer ends.

Questions
How long does it take to prepare for CELPIP?
It depends on the gap between your current level and your goal. Four weeks of daily practice is a realistic plan for gaining about one level in your weakest skill; a bigger gap needs longer.
How long is the CELPIP test?
About three hours in one sitting: listening (46 to 55 minutes), reading (43 to 56 minutes), writing (53 minutes) and speaking (15 minutes).
Is the CELPIP speaking test with a person?
No. You speak to the computer, which records your answers, and trained raters score the recordings later.
When do I get my CELPIP results?
Results are posted online in your account, usually within a few business days. celpip.ca gives 2 to 4 business days.
Can I take CELPIP at home?
CELPIP-General is taken at a test centre. Booking is by location and date on celpip.ca.
